Viral Show Idea by Sadie Kiefer
I would say what makes a show go viral, is its sustainability to keep the audience on its “toes” (so to speak), and its’ ability to produce an emotional connection with the audience as well. Just look at things, like the development of TV, compared to today’s form/s of TV. In 2000, as listed on page 353 of our text, it shows there was rising popularity in documentaries, as compared to the early 1900s and silent movies popularity. Now in the 21st century, we have TV shows that went viral, such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Stranger Things. In Breaking Bad the characteristics that made this show go viral, was its ability to produce emotional connection with “Walter White” and “Jesse Pinkman.” Where Walter White is trying to set his family up for success after his inevitable death, due to a Cancer 4th stage diagnosis. I feel a lot of people connected to that show, because Water White quite literally “kicked butt” for his family, ensuring they don’t have to struggle financially in the future after he should die. For Jesse Pinkman, a lot of people may have empathized with him, because of the innocence of childhood, in refusing to see that someone like your teacher, could be making meth on the side, and further doing it for his family, but all the while Jesse creates this bond with Walter, that makes you tear up a couple of times throughout the movie which was heart wrenching as well.
For the sake of the in-house TV show that Netflix will air, I will demonstrate a show that will go viral. The theme of my show will be political opposition to a ruler like Putin. The show will be a story of how Alexei Navalny will turn out to be alive after Putin tried to kill him on the days succeeding Valentine’s Day. The story will empower the audience by showing that not even death can stop a revolutionary. The genre of the show will be a momentous documentary, that is filled with suspense, and ultimately a clash of ideals (Nalvaney versus Putin) and how the people will ultimately rise up against Putin and his armies, to create a better world for the generations of tomorrow and the present. The plot will take place in Russia of course, where Alexei Navalny’s death was faked due to the leader, Vladimir Putin, not being able to find his body, after ordering his death. This will display a lack of authority and fairness to the prisoner Navalny and further show that Putin doesn’t have a clue what happens in his country’s prison (where Navalany was kept). In addition, the plot will show the upheaval of events while Navalny rises once more and takes Putin into debates as to why he put him in jail, in a court setting, where Putin is held accountable and can’t just try to kill Navalny with one of many of his conspirators, but rather that he has to “face the music” and defeat Navalny politically by earning the trust of his people. However, through many arguments, Navalny will prove to be a much better leader for Russia, and show the people of Russia and the world, that Putin must be held accountable for his actions against not only attempting to kill Navalny by poison (actual event in history), but also face the hard truths of his stance in Ukraine. Many characters, such as Navalny’s mom will infiltrate the dictatorship of Russia’s Federal Republic government, along with the help of Navalny’s wife, Yulia, while Navalny distracts the supposed “great leader” from the infiltration. All the while Navalny tells the court his tale of the prison he was confined to, and how he fights against Putin’s evils, in one way or the other, stating, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good people to do nothing.” With those words, people from all walks of life gather outside the courtroom and the main event will show to unravel itself in a spectacular and poignant moment for the people to demand a change, and overthrow Vladimir Putin himself. This show tells the tale of how important it is to demand change, especially when leaders themselves don’t hold their actions accountable for the change that they demand to see within the people as well, given things like Putin’s lavish lifestyle. We need to be more kind to one another, and when a dictator proves to be unsupportive of said role, we can with force, overthrow the dictatorship that which confines us.
I think this show would attract a lot of people, because not only does it show what would happen if Navalny had more support from other countries, but also it shows the life that Navalny could’ve had given he was “found” dead on February 16th. It also shows the debate, both physical, between Putin and Navalny (face-to-face), and intellectual, where there will be only one winner and/or right leader for Russia.
In streaming services and TV, I see the opportunity for virtual reality to be incorporated into everyday TV channels. Whereas they are only really available on TV streaming services right now, such as Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video. However, the problem with streaming services and TV is the advancement of AI. I think that there will be less regulation of AI services, therefore much more people can be abruptly brought to something on the internet via their TV, that they don’t need to produce, or don’t want to see. I see more AI being incorporated into streaming services, as well as TV itself. No matter where you go, I think the activation and multi-plex of information will readily inform us of different channels and/or services that have never been offered before or as compared to the past. It can be a downfall or make the way of life surrounding TV and/or streaming services.
